Train service overreaction

To the editor: I am amazed at how the citizens and council members of Byram are overreacting to the proposed train service. I have been a follower of this project for years and am shocked that people are so misinformed. 1. If anyone has actually read the environmental study it says NO side effects from trains. Remember this train line is already built. The only thing missing are the rails. 2. Councilman Esposito from Byram states “80 people” will benefit from this project. Again wrong. The actual number is 4,000. That’s 4,000 cars off of Route 80. That can make a difference. 3. New Jersey is not paying for a Pennsylvania rail line. There will be an operating agreement where Pennsylvania pays New Jersey Transit to run the trains. Metro North does the same thing with trains that operate to Port Jervis already. I am somewhat shocked that people are calling for more bus lines in the state. The buses get stuck in traffic as well. Trains are faster and much better for the environment. One train is equivalent to 20 buses. Again the choice seems simple. I hope everyone actually reads the facts and stops spreading these false rumors. The future of transportation is going to back to rails and hopefully one town will see the benefits it can do to an entire region! Keith Smollin
