Commissioners recognizes MS awareness, anti-tobacco initiatives
Newton. Sussex County Board of County Commissioners issued proclamations supporting National Multiple Sclerosis Society awareness efforts and the national anti-tobacco campaign led by Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
The Sussex County Board of County Commissioners recognized two public health initiatives during its March 25 meeting, issuing proclamations for Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week and Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action.
Commissioner Chris Carney presented the first proclamation, officially recognizing March 8 through 14 as MS Awareness Week in Sussex County. The proclamation cited the work of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in supporting people living with multiple sclerosis and promoting research aimed at finding a cure.
Tammy Quasius, a Sussex County resident representing the society’s New Jersey Metro Chapter, accepted the proclamation and encouraged residents to support the cause through volunteering, donations and advocacy.
Commissioner David Silverthorne later introduced a second proclamation recognizing April 1 as Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action, a youth-focused campaign led by Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco and nicotine use.
In New Jersey, the initiative is supported by Center for Prevention and Counseling, Tobacco Free for a Healthy NJ and Incorruptible Us. Student representatives Avery Wuhrl and Abigail Lanza from High Point Regional High School accepted the proclamation on behalf of their school’s Incorruptible chapter.
Following the meeting, Carney said the MS Society’s progress in research and advocacy continues to make a difference for people living with the disease. Silverthorne added that public education remains important as youth increasingly encounter nicotine through vaping and electronic cigarettes rather than traditional tobacco products.
