Newton falls to Mahwah in North Group 1 boys lacrosse quarterfinals

Michael Branagh recorded four goals and two assists to lead fifth-seeded Mahwah to a 9-8 victory over fourth-seeded Newton in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Group 1 boys lacrosse tournament on June 1.

Mahwah improved to 12-9 and advanced to face top-seeded Mountain Lakes in the semifinal round.

Cameron Robator added three goals and one assist for Mahwah, while Connor Soha contributed a goal and an assist. Damon Petersen scored once and Vaughn Carragher added an assist. Goalkeeper Cole Boruta made 11 saves to help preserve the one-goal victory.

Newton finished the season with a 15-7 record. The Braves matched Mahwah’s offensive output in the third quarter, scoring four goals to remain within striking distance.

Reid Corino paced Newton with four goals. Evan Cotter scored once and excelled at the faceoff circle, winning 15 of 20 draws.

Tyler Catalano and Matt Ellsworth each contributed a goal and an assist, while Landyn Zosche also scored for Newton. Matthew Fisk made four saves in goal.
